There have been countless J2 fics about how they can't or couldn't stand each other, but their contract included Jared being photographed climbing Jensen like a tree in public, and the touchy feely stuff before the cameras, the exchange of glances and grins, the whole "relationship" orchestrated by contract. Can you imagine if that were true? And now they're contracted to be "living" together? Man, what an acting job, huh?
I suspect the truth is somewhere in the middle.
I know this is an endlessly sticky discussion that gets brought up every so often, but... from my (just my, I'm not advocating for anyone else) perspective I find it very uncomfortable to read J2 fic. I find I can read Wincest, most of it anyway, which I know makes many people here run screaming in the opposite direction (and here I insert the standard disclaimer that yes, I understand the distinction between honest to God reality where siblings should not touch one anther with such intent, and the fictional universe the Winchesters inhabit that is populated by ghouls and zombies and werewolves and two men who have lived in a bubble so isolated from sustained emotional contact with anyone but each other that incest could become a twisted, logical outcome in such a high-pressure constantly death-defying lifestyle) (and OMG I don’t think I’ve ever written such a run-on sentence in my life).
But the J2 fictions are something else entirely, because they aren’t just taking fictional characters and making them do things, they’re taking actual people and moving them about like puppets. I’m not sure if I just find it unseemly, or rude, or intrusive, or just wrong. But they make me uncomfortable.
Making actual people into puppets implies a passive position that I don't think applies to J2. Any other RPS that I can think of, sure, but I think J2 is a product that is performed to promote the show (and the actors) in a public venue. Purposeful, like an MCR concert. I think of J2 fic (or icons or art or whatev) as a fan response to the J2 'verse. Does that make J2 Hamlet, and Supernatural is the play within the play? I would probably be uncomfortable though if I didn't think it was all done with a wink and a nudge. On their part. To their audience. For the most part, I don't think we have seen JP or JA out of character in a public appearance since early season one. Jensen especially is more at ease (imo) now that he is playing this part in public. So to me, J2 is a different animal than other RPS. It would also be different if the guys didn't know about or weren't actively participating in J2. Or indicated with words or body language that they were uncomfortable with that perception being out there. Lord knows, they aren't afraid to take action on something they really find objectionable.
Austin, incoming at your profile addy.
Investigation into whether Dean really does sleep closest to the door.
Huh, I had no idea about the MCR->J2 equivalence in terms of it being something of a public performance.
Anne, that Ellen story was YOU! You are awesome! I loved that story SO MUCH.
I'm kind of shocked that nobody who didn't already know guessed who wrote my story. I mean, I even had a Buffista call out in it!

See, to me MCR = My Chemical Romance, so this is a little confusing. What MCR do you mean, Anne? Am I being dense?
