Did Dean's explanation to Sam just imply that they shouldn't die in battle for something, namely each other, but they should just "go down swinging?" Don't be a martyr, just die? How is the second option preferable?

I took it more as they should just fight on against the supernatural aboveboard the way they've been taught and not try to cut any deals with the enemy.
