Okay, that's all moonshine and speculation, but I think there's definitely an element of that at work.
I think so to, but didn't have the memory of hairstyles as they progressed over the years to back that half-baked thought up: that the exposure of JP's changing/solidifying facial bone structure was not only natural, but being capitalized on by the show to denote something changing/solidifying in Sammy.
I get that, and I shudder to imagine JP with his forehead and ears just hanging out there.

I think every time they feel like giving JA a haircut so he doesn't look like this anymore, they should reconsider and send JP in his stead.
