There's nothing to say that Lilith wouldn't have shown up and killed everyone anyway if they'd gone along with Ruby's plan. In fact, the one certain difference between the two is that the way things actually went down, Ruby herself survived. Assuming she was on the level about what her spell would do.

Amy, I don't know if you watched, but your girlcrush from AI is safe for this week.
Thank you, Sail! Hee.
Yeah, it's still hard to tell if Ruby's being completely straight with them.
I think I do believe that, for whatever reason, her own benefit or Sam's, that Ruby does want Sam to survive. So I think that she did want him to live through the siege tonight.
Assuming she was on the level about what her spell would do.
I'm wondering if she knew Lilith was in range of the spell and it would have killed her, too. If so, she should have made that clearer, although I think Dean and Sam would have still chosen to do what they did.
There's also the small possibility that no one actually died in the explosion? That there's some other shenanigans afoot?
Well, if they were going by actual remains, it would have to be something shady, wouldn't it? Because obviously there are no remains for our boys.
This is true. I tend to associate blinding white light with teleportation and dimensional travel rather than explosions. Also, possibly with naked actors falling from the ceiling.
I have pretty much given up on believing that anyone is really truly dead.
Also, possibly with naked actors falling from the ceiling.
We're STILL waiting for that scene on this series.
