JDM was quie a bit heavier in this. He's slimmed down since.
Easy to imagine that he was settling into a comfortable, married-with-kids routine. Becoming a hunter would account for becoming leaner.

It still kills me, seeing happy!baby! Sam, and realizing he remembers nothing about his mother. That Dean could cling to a few memories of the life they had before they died, but Sam knows nothing but John and Dean, and not even a stable home.
