"What would it take to get your daughter to stop tweeting about this?"

maybe his first from his sporadic highschool days

I'm thinking this is a likely scenario.

How old is Dean now? Tweny-eight in the third season? Dean, in his mid teens, if left for days alone with access to college age girls. Think Tim Riggins from FNL. That would have been maybe too early for Dean to be as careful as he needed to be.

Now that I think about it, the way the Riggins brothers lived may be a good model of how Sam was able to go to high school.

that's what I was thinking, and why I specifically mentioned that time in his life. Young, "I will live forever!", indestructible, "it'll never happen to me". He grew up fast, had lots of responsibility since he was, what, four? but I think hormones could get in a way of that, and be a totally different kind of responsibility. Different from knowing how to protect baby Sam, use a gun, cook spaghettios and not set the place on fire. That was day in, day out, waking and sleeping. But girls? Whole new ballgame. And maybe John was so obsessed with hunting that he didn't think to have The Conversation with Dean until he realized that his oldest had already started fooling around.

Yeah, there might be a 10, 11, 12 year old Dean out there.

but I think hormones could get in a way of that

I agree. I wasn't factoring those wonderful things into the equation at first.

and maybe the Winchester's skipped town before Peggy Sue realized she'd been knocked up, and before Daddy came after Dean with a shotgun (which, good thing, right? "My daddy can outshoot your daddy!")

Ha.

Definitely. If they had known, I can't see John or Dean walking away.

Ooooh, maybe down the road Dean can find out that John did know, but let him leave anyway, thinking the kid was better off. There could be some angst for you. Although, I don't know if John would really do that.

::bounces:: But you know it would be even better pain? If Sam knew also (I don't know how he found out) and never told Dean.

Now I can't remember. Have we had an episode where Dean suspected a kid was his because of the way the kid acted ? Nevermind. I just remembered. I was thinking of the Dead in the Water kid when Dean had him say "Zeppelin Rules!"

Days shrink and grow cold, sunlight through leaves is my song. Winter is long.

Snarky, younger-brother-protecting Michael was pretty obviously Dean-esque in Something Wicked, too.

Consuela, if you would take up the banner for nilchance, I'd read it, and trumpet your praises far and wide. I'm frustrated by there not being more there, too.

I think I'm going to re-read Gimme Shelter and Paint it Black, follow it up with Cartography in Empty Spaces and Edge of the Known World and go to bed.

Point: is it okay to put links to SPN fic in the SPN thread? Or should I confine them to the fic rec thread, even if they're to older stories?

Which can play into the "Sam taking care of Dean" role reversal that I also want for S3.

On one hand, I was thinking I'd like to see Dean interacting with a younger kid, and that a ten year old would be not so ready with the affection and wooby factor. Old enough to be weird, maybe. And definitely old enough that taking them out of their normal life and onto the road would be a major culture shock. But on the other hand, perhaps just old enough for Dean to try slapping a gun in the kids hands and teaching her (or him) to shoot.

Bev, could you pretend that you're discovering the fics for the first time and post the links?

(IOW, I don't mind you posting old links and selfishly don't want to have to wade through a bucket fic thread to find one or two fandoms I like. I like this one central location for all things SPN. But that's just me.)

Cartography in Empty Spaces, followed by Edge of the Known World. There's a "prequel" to Cartography, from Dean's POV, here, but I'd read it after Cartography, for more sense-making. And there's an author's commentary on Cartography, here, if you like that sort of thing.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

Personally, I hope any children that might appear outside of Sam & Dean flashbacks will be monster chow by episode's end. I'm hard pressed to think of a show less tonally suited to spending time with the leads cooing over cute little Cousin Oliver.
