I like that Dean is horrified by Ronald's death. They see a lot of bad but innocent people dying still matters.
I also think Dean saw some similarities, and liked him, and was freaked about how quickly he died, for no good reason. (How easily Dean, or Sam, could die for no reason.)

It was never clear. I always wondered why the shifter in Skin didn't change into Sam.
