Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
Just a note. For Comcast victims customers, Woody Allen's Sleeper just came into rotation on the free On-Demand. One of the funniest movies of all time (IMO) , the best (IMO) of his "early funny ones". (I'm assuming the same stuff comes up at the same time with Comcast nationally. At least any time I've heard past discussions that seems to happen.)
Pfft. If you did not see Crank, you do not know how awesome the sequel will be. Guaran-fucking-teed.
All I can say about Crank is that when the car wound up on the escalator, I stopped worrying and embraced the madness. Okay, also, I was drunk, and we were watching it on PPV. But we were all like "?????" for the first third and then we decided this was the greatest movie ever. And I hope to be as drunk and delighted when I see the sequel. For free, ideally, because god knows it won't be worth paying for, but that's the charm.
In conclusion: you may mock Crank, but only if you conclude with "...So it was the stupidest thing ever, and it KNEW it was stupid, that's why it was AWESOME."
when the car wound up on the escalator
Oh my God, I must see this movie.
"...So it was the stupidest thing ever, and it KNEW it was stupid, that's why it was AWESOME."
This is what I hear about Shoot Em Up as well.
Shoot Em Up was far far better. I never reached the "stupidly awesome" point in Crank.
Oscar noms
I blame lolcats for making me think "Oscar noms...oooh, Robert Downey Jr. nom nom nom!!!"
Oh, I'm glad that Melissa Leo got nominated!
Just because I like her - haven't seen the movie yet but I hear it's great.
I have not heard of "The Visitor" at all.
The Visitor is supposed to be a great little film. About a guy who comes to his pied a terre in NY to find two illegal immigrants staying there. And he lets them stay. I think it came out last spring and was in theatres for like, a week. It's on my list to rent since it was actually in my local theatre for only a week.
I did not find the film as good as the critics' reviews. But perhaps I am a crank.
I found the film to be actually very sad - when considered from the perspectives of individuals who weren't the main character.
