Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

And by "missed" you mean were really glad that somehow that passed you by?

Best westerns I've seen (which is an admittedly short list):

Stagecoach (1939)
True Grit
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Destry Rides Again
Winchester '73
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Dances with Wolves

I've not seen any spaghetti Westerns, so take that into account. For sheer entertainment value, I'm tempted to add Hidalgo, but that'd be mostly for the Viggo factor, as well as his chemistry with his horse.

ETA: Cowboy with Jack Lemmon and Glenn Ford was excellent and should be added to this list!

You don't like Red River?

Or The Big Country ?

(Two of my favorites.)

Oh and Joss working with UA to make his Cabin in the Woods feature.

I've never seen those!

I'll admit to having a very short range of exposure to Westerns, mostly through my dad, who loves the older ones, especially with John Wayne. Last year, we saw that film Cowboy that I added because he had vague memories of liking it when it came out, and it was better than he remembered and than I expected.

Has anyone else seen the trailer for 9? It's up at Apple trailers. Watch it in HD if you can. I shall say no more for those who haven't seen it. (Cant link. iPhone.)

No, I don't think I will - me, quoting Captain Steve Rogers, to all of 2020

Silverado.

Good western.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

Would you all put Unforgiven on that list?

I know people who don't like Unforgiven, but it's in contention for top western in my book.

Ooh, Silverado is fun.

I haven't seen Unforgiven (yet) - nor sadly have I seen Appaloosa yet. Still disappointed that it's not about a spotted horse.

What's the one where Maureen O'Hara is John Wayne's ex and she sends him after his grandson who has been kidnapped? That one's fun.

Also: The Rare Breed.

Because books.

I LOVE Unforgiven. Definitely one of my top Westerns, if not the top.
