"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

The African Queen isn't available on DVD? That's just tragic.

"Fuck Western ideologically-motivated gender identification!" Sulu gasped, and came.

If you were going to choose a movie as a candidate for 'one of the all time greats' that would be widely recognized and agreed on, what would it be? Not the best movie of all time, but a movie you could get widespread agreement would be a candidate for that (with some people of course considering it the best, but the idea is that almost everyone would consider it one of the greats.) For example, maybe Casablanca?

Taking this not as meaning 'what's your favourite movie, Fay?', but rather 'what movie do you think has huge/universal appeal?' I'm going to go with The Shawshank Redemption.

If I want to become a cloud of bats, does each bat need a separate vaccination?

"I want to stop crime!" "I want Rachael!" "I want to fuck shit up!"

Seriously, the movie is like watching a supervillain AA meeting. "Hi, I'm the Joker and I'm an anarch-aholic." Lather, rinse, repeat.

I have never seen The Shawshank Redemption. DH hates it so I probably won't bother.

I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul—Calvin and Hobbs

I have never seen The Shawshank Redemption.

I think the novella is one of King's better ones.

I finally watched Dark Knight again and liked it more. The stuff I wasn't sure how to take worked better for me on a second viewing. And that write-up I linked to sort of prepped me. I think the thing that surprised me the most was that the Two-Face effect seemed to work better on a tv screen, where it's still nasty but it's not so incredibly distracting.

For every brilliant little moment, there's a clunky overwritten scene where 2 characters rehash their thematic mission statements and stop the movie dead in its tracks.
Gordon's stuff at the very end is the only thing that really makes me roll my eyes. But I guess I feel like a comic book movie should have some melodramatic speeches. Just, not from Gordon. For everyone else it's kind of in character, y'know?

Shawshank is like a Taco Bell meal. There are times when it'll hit the spot, but, wow, that's a lot of cheese and corn. Although my mom hated it violently, and for years you could start her ranting by just mentioning it. Good times.

Okay, does this mean that Penn & Teller Get Killed is available in some other region? Because if so, I need to find it.

Over at guardian.co.uk's Film Unlimited talk boards The Shawshank Redemption was regarded disdainfully as 'the favourite movie of people who don't know much about movies'. Which is perhaps a little unkind, but not without a certain degree of truth.

It has the sort of broad-ranging appeal that Tom Hanks seems to possess. It was a handy verbal shorthand over at FU - you might describe an actor, or a book, or a foodstuff or whatever as 'The Shawshank Redemption of t insert type of thing .'

Kiss me, my girl, before I'm sick.

23 Great Films Not Available on Region 1 DVD

I have been waiting for YEARS for my favourite flick, A Matter of Life and Death, to come out on region 1 DVD. It's been out in region 2 for a while. Amazon thinks that we might be finally getting a R1 version next month, but I'm not holding my breath, yo.

I do adore Shawshank Redemption, cheese and ponderous voice-overs and all. I wept like a baby at Red's last voice-over ("I hope to see my friend, and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope,") when I first watched it in theater -- I won't lie.

The Guardian did an article on the enduring broad-ranged appeal of the movie a while ago... let me see. Here it is. [link]

Because books.

I love Shawshank, without reservation. And I agree that it's one of King's best stories.

Odd that they didn't mention you can't get Rebecca on DVD right now, which annoys me to no end.
