Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
We saw Milk last night, which I really liked. It really gave a sense of time and place and culture. Penn was as good as everyone says. With the whole Prop 8 thing going on, the political element of the story was doubly powerful.
We also saw The Day the Earth Sucked Ass Stood Still. So deeply, stupidly, profoundly bad. We snuck in, and I STILL feel like I overpaid.

Scrappy, how did it compare to Zodiac which covers a similar era in SF?
Oh, I liked it much more. Van Sant uses news footage in really smart way and the haircuts and clothes, etc. all feel totally real and not "designed".

Yeah, I was afraid of that. I always thought TDTESS might be worth a remake/update, but it would have to be done right, and I had a gnawing suspicion that this wasn't it.
I saw Baby Mama on Friday. It is not funny. Thankfully, Tina Fey did not write it.

Having no energy to leave the house this weekend, and wanting to test Netflix streaming on TiVo, I finally watched the original. It was much better than I suspected.
Finally watched the third Mummy movie this weekend. It was really very enjoyable, I thought. I mean, yes, no plot, but anyone who actually goes into those films with the idea of having much plot is going to be disappointed anyway.
Plus, bonus! Shirtless Brendan Fraser.
Still so, so pretty.
Daaaamn. A.O. Scott on Seven Pounds:
Frankly, though, I don’t see how any review could really spoil what may be among the most transcendently, eye-poppingly, call-your-friend-ranting-in-the-middle-of-the-night-just-to-go-over-it-one-more-time crazily awful motion pictures ever made.

The original is an excellent film. It's one of my favorites. It was quite astute and even radical for its time.
