Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

See? I gave everybody here an opportunity to tell me what a bad person I am and nobody did, because I fuckin' rule.

Another movie I caught on TCM recently was an odd romantic fantasy titled Portrait of Jennie with Joseph Cotton and Jennifer Jones. Anybody seen it?

Oh, sweetheart, of course. And read the book, too. Have a gentle soft spot for both.

brillig

Boreanaz in full-on Angelus mode could do a creditable "The only choice I'm giving you is do I start with the left eye or right eye." It pops up occasionally through the goofiness on Bones.

Always Anti-fascist!

How about the guy that played Tolliver on Deadwood? Of course, he played scary a lot before that too. Maybe modern actors are too worried about being likable?

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

How about the guy that played Tolliver on Deadwood?

Yeah, now that you mention it, the HBO shows had a lot of menacing actors.

Ann, that's a ferret.

I'm having a hard time thinking of American actors who go there.

Do they have to be alive? Because Laird Cregar could do menace like nobody's business -- just check out The Lodger on TCM when it comes on near Halloween. If he hadn't died at age 29, he'd have been one of the greats.

Omar! Um, I mean, Michael K. Williams of course. Although if I see him I yell "Omar!"

I was looking for a current list, but...

Because Laird Cregar could do menace like nobody's business

...it's always good to remember Laird's intense, weird screen presence.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

I'm having a hard time thinking of American actors who go there.

Viggo Mortensen can do it well enough to make up for the lack of hundreds of other actors.

That's true. I think we've talked before about his performance in The Prophecy.

Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

mmm, Viggo. How about Larry Fishburne?
