Except Marienbad is apparently not available. Seriously? Is there a new version coming out or something? I would have thought it was already Criterion.
No, Criterion never did it. There was a DVD, but it's long out of print. They had a new print making the rounds last year (and I missed it, CURSES!), so I'm hoping there WILL be a new version soon, Criterion or otherwise.
I've only seen bits and pieces, which is why I'm not sure about the
Mad Men
thing. It's really pathetic, especially since I had Robbe-Grillet as a professor in grad school.
I like "Necessary Roughness".
"You must learn to show respect!" And the referee using the correct names for the kung fu moves.
The theory on House Next Door was that the film was La Tour de Nesle by Abel Gance. Having seen neither, I have no theories, myself.

Hmm, haven't seen it, but I have a bizarre fascination with stories about the Tour de Nesle, which I discovered while teaching about Paris in the Middle Ages.
Besides, you know if Alexandre Dumas (père, natch) wrote about it, it's got to be good.

Well, if this (from the IMDB description) is true:
The last lines of the movie are François Villon's immortal lines from his poem "ballade des dames du temps jadis"(second half of the fifteenth century).
Then they are probably right. That matches what I heard (having also taught Villon in my Paris course) in the clip Don was watching.
The style and time frame is what led me to think it was Marienbad.
All I know is that you're my favorite French cinema professor, and I'm still working through some of the more well-known highbrow French flicks. So, once you work it out, I'm going to take your word.
See Films Differently. These are really funny. The main one is about
Toy Story,
and the interpretation is pretty brilliant. The
Ghostbusters
one is good, too, and the others are fairly amusing. Especially
Die Hard,
which is the one that makes the least sense.
Also, everything's better in a British accent.
I am looking forward to seeing the new Coen brothers film (Burn This After Reading is the title, right?), because it looks like goofy fun with lots of big names.
Burn After Reading got a rave from the Guardian at the Venice Film Festival.

Well, that goes without saying....
