A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

Total agreement on the Dracula thoughts. If only. I can imagine a couple of ways Depp would have taken that role...both leagues above Keanu...with whom I actually have no problem as a rule.

I saw the Day the Earth Stood Still trailer tonight in front of TDK. It looks visually arresting, but I was not engaged in the story at all.

TDK exceeded my expectations like whoa. Seriously, I was surprised by what a well made film it is. I agreed in retrospect with most of the comments here, both good and critical but I have to say, it kept me riveted.

And while I was certain that Ledger's star was shining brighter due to the Deification of Death...I was wrong, he earned every scrap of praise heaped on him.

And you could really see every penny of the budget on screen.

Nice one Nolan.

You should know I'm a big deal in the Resistance.

D and I both laughed our way through the Day the Earth Stood Still trailer but we agreed it'd probably worth seeing for the visal effects.

especially considering it cost an estimated 100 million less than Spider-Man 3.

No LIE? Oh my ever-loving god.

Well. There you go. I saw something about how Nolan tried to do mostly in-camera effects. Real deal type stuff...which gave the scenes so much more gravity.

Versus the crap-pull me right out of the story, 'whizbang' effects in SM3. Granted, you can't really costume for a giant sand monster, but still.

I loved that I recognized so many great character actors in the background. It seemed like a bunch of veterans lined up and said, "Me! Pick me! I'll do anything to be in this movie. Can I shine your shoes Mr. Nolan?" Just for the privilege of being a part of it. Or, maybe Nolan is a great guy that people love working with. Either way, made of win.

I wish I'd known Nestor Carbonell was going to be in it beforehand because when my brain said, "hey, that's Batmanuel!" I laughed out loud at an inappropriate moment. But hey, at least I didn't bring an infant to a 10:40 pm show.

Saw Mamma Mia last night. It was very fun. Joyful, really.

I actually came out with a semi-audible "It's Batmanuel!" in the theater, even though I knew he was coming. No laughs from the audience, sadly.

move out and draw fire

WB should bestow a knighthood upon Nolan or something, seeing as how he just got their ass out of the Speed Racer sling.

Our houseguest spent Sunday at the movies, seeing TDK and Mamma Mia back to back. Interesting combo. She keeps raving about "Keith Ledger's" performance.

Me too. And then, for entirely too long, I gazed at his eyes wondering if he has had eyeliner permanently tattooed or something. Such distinct lashes. I don't know that I actually heard any of his dialog.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

Heh. It's gone now, but the IMDb FAQ for the movie used to have the question "Why is the Mayor wearing eyeliner?"
