I know of her through fannish song-sharing AND she seems to be a regular inhabitant of gossip news here, because she is so very much a talented trainwreck. But I literally don't know if she's had a US hit at all.
FWIW I'm still impressed with her singing, whatever her personal shortcomings.
She got nominated for a crapload of Grammys. I'd say she's known.
Huh. I've no idea why, but I hadn't expected her to have made a name for herself outside the UK. I suppose that's what having Universal as your label does for you.
I suspect having public meltdowns that make Britney Spears look like Donna Reed probably helped spread the fame a little, too.
I think Rehab has been her only hit over here. I was excited when someone brought a CD of hers in to work but disappointed when it seemed like all the songs sounded the same.
I like the retro-Stax sound, but I like Sharon Jones fronting the Dap-Kings (who, it should be said, are the band on Back To Black) better than Winehouse, because Winehouse doesn't have much inflection or emotion in her voice (Jones, on the other hand, can push her feelings like a pro). Maybe Winehouse will live long enough to learn something. Maybe not.
Yeah, Amy's range is very limited. A few years ago she was singing weird Spanish songs at small UK gigs, and didn't have the beehive.
Is Amy Winehouse known in the US?
I know her best from Never Mind the Buzzcocks on youtube. Her episode was funny and really painful. Simon Amstell pulled no punches with the 'get into rehab' sentiment of the panel...and Amy was clearly wasted...in more ways than one.
Dark Knight leaked trailer--really crappy pirate quality. Officially it's supposed to be out next weekend.
I don't know why it's bugging me so much. Usually people mispronounce the names of movies all the time and I don't even bother to correct them. But if one more person asks for tickets for
I'm a legend.
I want to tell them, "no. You're not."
