Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

Hot Fuzz was awesome.

And I counted two UK Office cameos, not counting Martin Freeman.

Also, since there were some references to the original Wicker Man, I'm now wondering what other films featuring Dalton, Nighy, um... what's his name... the guy who played Belloq in Raiders...., Broadbent, were referenced in the movie.

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

I just watched Children of Men.

How the FUCK did that film not win any Oscars?

Kiss me, my girl, before I'm sick.

Because the Academy doesn't know how to find its own ass with two hands?

CoM was my favourite film last year and in my head, it won all the awards it was nominated for and a bunch of others (like, oh, the Best Picture.) Honestly, I'm trying to remember which film won for Best Picture this year and drawing a complete blank.

The Departed, which I thought kind of sucked.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I liked The Departed a whole lot--up until the end, where I thought it got needlessly twisty.

My sister watched The Prestige last night, and now she's waiting for me to explain it to her. Should be interesting.

Oh, right. I liked it OK, although I thought it didn't hold a candle to the original.

It's been too long since I've seen the original. I may need to have company round.

Has anyone done the Viewer's Companion to Hot Fuzz? For all the references? I got most of The Wicker Man ones I think, plus I The Omen and Scream and stuff.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

The Departed also beat out Children of Men for the only major award it was nominated for, Best Adapted Screenplay. I don't remember what else was nominated, but I agree that it was a much better movie than The Departed.
