The final season of Face Off started last night.
Non-Fiction TV: I Reject Your Reality and Substitute My Own
This thread is for non-fiction TV, including but not limited to reality television (So You Think You Can Dance, Top Chef: Masters, Project Runway), documentaries (The History Channel, The Discovery Channel), and sundry (Expedition Africa, Mythbusters), et al. [NAFDA]
They started a new season of So You Think You Can Dance on Monday. They don't seem to be doing anything gimmicky, but I missed the first part of it.
And I'm watching Meet the Lords on PBS - it's a behind the scenes look at the House of Lords ... it has its moments.
I am not loving the new gimmick on MasterChef. Hopefully once the season gets going the judge's team thing will calm down a little.
World of Dance is on as well. There are some amazing dancers this year and a few have come back . One couple almost got a perfect score for the qualifying round. They also changed the groupings so now there are upper and junior teams. I can't remember the exact divisions lasy year but they had so many good juniors they accomdated for it.
World of Dance is so shiny, but not necessarily in the good way. It's 100% Glitz! and Lights! and Excitement!, which seems so horribly American. That said, it's a little more satisfying than SYTYCD because you get some results right away. But SYTYCD will always have my heart.
MasterChef is always sort of annoying to me, and I stopped watching after Bastianich left. So I'm watching again! He's so pompous and egotistical, but I inexplicably love him.
I saw SYTYCD started but I haven't watched! I'm not a huge fan of the audition shows, until they get to Vegas.
I like World of Dance becsus because you get to see what the dancers do best and there is no fear they'll end up going home because they aren't great at ballroom or something.
Last night there was a ballroom couple who barely made it through on their routine. It wasn't flashy and no tricks just amazing dancing. Derek Hough and JLo scored them ok but Ne-Yo didn't score them well. The others thought he was crazy .
There were also a pair of krumpers who had this incredible routine and to prepare for this they had taken choreography classes to get the timing and flow right and it was so good.
And there was a dance troupe from Japan that blew me away.
I got kind of frustrated with SYTYCD putting people with bad dancers and then saving the bad dancers or doing gimmicky dances that really can't be done well and sending people home. I didn't really watch last year thougj and I know it changed.
I need to get back into watching dance shows, but I am also finding so much of my dance viewing fulfilled by kpop music. (And there is crossover - some of the best kpop dance numbers of the past 5 years are actually NappyTabs choreography, notably EXO's Call Me Baby [link] and Monster [link] for which I looooooove the point dance.)
I also recommend 1 Million Dance Studio. They post original choreo for US pop songs as well as create choreo for a variety of kpop artists. Their channel: [link]
This turned up on PBS and I found it riviting. It's about this amazing early hominid fossil site in a virtually inaccessible cave in South Africa. It's a Nova/National Geograpahic production.
Two episodes of The Grrst British Baking Show aired last night. Love this show.
