Non-Fiction TV: I Reject Your Reality and Substitute My Own
This thread is for non-fiction TV, including but not limited to reality television (So You Think You Can Dance, Top Chef: Masters, Project Runway), documentaries (The History Channel, The Discovery Channel), and sundry (Expedition Africa, Mythbusters), et al. [NAFDA]
And now I'm kind of wrung out. This team challenge ended up being pretty damn emotional.
It was, and I was sad at who went home, but I really thought it was striking that there wasn't a lot of drama on the teams while the collection was being put together. That seems so unusual for a team challenge on PR.
Right? I was really hoping Tim would use his save, which I am generally against, but the losing team all having each other's backs like that was so moving.
To be honest, I can't remember any of Alex's designs now, but I really enjoyed his personality.
The winning team, too, actually. That the three strongest designers each got two "endorsements" and no one said they themselves should win - very nice.
I totes thought Tim was going to use his save. I wouldn't have been mad at that. This was one of the better team challenges in terms of designer behavior if not in terms of overall output. (I didn't really care for either team's collection and I thought Erin's coat was straight up fugly) I'm super happy with this batch of designers. Laurence and Roberi are my faves. Erin, well, I appreciate her but her design aesthetic is just not my jam. I love Tasha and Mah-Jing as personalities, but I don't think either one has the chops to win PR. Corey wears me out. I wish he'd skeedaddle on home, but I don't hate him. I haven't watched a full season of PR in many, many moons, but this one is on my DVR now!
I'd agree with those assessments, although I do like Erin's Bright Yellow is Awesome thing. I didn't love her coat, but I did like Tasha's skirt with Laurence's jacket a whole lot, and that was the same fabric, right?
I want to root for Brik from Baton Rouge, but he's just not much of a designer. Tasha's from Shreveport, though, and I do like her stuff, though not as much as I like her personal style, maybe. Dexter, though, I'm loving Dexter. And Roberi had at least two designs that I loved that didn't get critiqued, just safe. I don't know about Rik overall, but that swimsuit and coverup were totally my cup of tea.
Rik is all over the place as a designer. I really enjoyed his bathing suit and cover up, but he also made that lace up skirt that was too tacky for Heidi. When you are too tacky for Heidi, you know something has gone horribly horribly wrong with your design. I love Dexter the person, but I haven't been wowed by anything he's made. I just feel badly for Brik because he seems so sweet but he's really not on the level of the rest of the designers in the group. I will be glad to see him go home. The little latina girl has not made any impression on me other than that she is Corey's friend.
PR- I did not get the hype about Jenni's dress. It was kinda weird looking to me and also the accusations that she stole the idea from Erin. like applique has never been done before.
I like Dexter but I was wondering what was going to happen when they kept showing him and Erin talking about all the time they had to kill. Although I didn't think Erin's dress was all that terrible.
And I think Laurence should have won.
Laurence should win everything! But that LBD in particular was killer and had it all over Jenni's dress. I actually liked Rik's leather dress better than Jenni's dress, too. Her dress was fine but nothing special to me.
I knew both Dexter and Erin were toast when they kept going on and on about how they were sure they were going to be in the top three. It's like, "Have you ever watched the show before? Do you even Project Runway, bro?" That said, I didn't think Erin's dress was that bad. Yes, it was a little costume-y, but I think there were worse looks that walked the runway last night. (Wasn't a fan of Brick's look at all) I think they just wanted to take her down a peg after her being in the top or winning on every single challenge to date. Whatever. This is PR. Drama has to happen. And my fave didn't even make the top three. Roberi! He doesn't get the props he deserves. I don't know why his aesthetic seems to not be connecting with the judges, but I loved his look. He listened to Tim and backed away from the original skirt he was planning on, but he stayed true to his vision and to that print and I thought the final look was gorgeous and unexpected.
Tasha seemed very sweet and totally in over her head, so I wasn't surprised to see her go.
I didn't get Roberi's look. It was pretty, but looked like a day dress to me. And I really liked Brick's, for once. It's the one I would be most likely to pick out to wear myself, probably. But Laurence's and Rik's are better dresses. I don't care for that grosgrain (I don't mind the zipper) across the back of Rik's, but I love it from the front, and Laurence's is exquisite. I like Jenni's vision with the gold, but I don't love her silhouette. I think there might be a proportion issue? Or maybe it's just shapeless. Kinda looks like a pillow case that's been cut down, to me.I would have loved it if it was more of a sheath or shift, I think. Narrower.
Dexter's did not go the direction I was hoping for when he got his Tim Critique. I was hoping for, like, accents of long fringe at the neck, not all the way around. I thought Emily's looked better in the workroom than on the runway, for some reason, like the feathers started wilting? And that's a very short skirt to have a bit of a slit. Nice color, though. I think the placement of the feathers was lazy and obvious - kind of the same issue I have with Dexter's. With a little more thought she could have doe something a lot better with the same materials, I bet.
Poor Tasha. She just never got her feet under her on this one. I have to agree with Nina, I'd wear Tasha's over Natalia's.
I don't care for Heidi's blue suit, either or maybe just the tie. No, I think the whole thing.. Really liked what Nina wore to the press thingy. I think I like the green thing she was in for judging, but it's also kind of unsettling with those fasteners hanging in midair.. Kind of hate Natalia's platform shoes, though I suspect I would love them with a different outfit.
