It took me longer than I planned (and it was not that easy), but I finally did a round-up of all 10 SYTYCD seasons, with my Top 5 in ballroom, contemporary/jazz, and hip hop along with a whole slew of other categories.
Season 5 got the most love, but Seasons 9 & 8 held their own, coming in next with the most mentions, before Season 2, which was a complete surprise to me. I was also pretty surprised how far behind Season 4 was overall. I guess the individuals were greater than the appeal of their dances.
I have not seen the first episode of The Sing Off yet because I am buried under all the stuff on my DVR, but I did watch the TAR finale and was happy with the Boston win. They were uniformly pleasant and mostly delightful the entire race. Maybe not the most exciting of winners ever, but unobjectionable. I never did warm up to Marie. I didn't think she got less obnoxious, just that she had fewer people to be obnoxious to and those people left didn't really let her get under their skins. I will admit that she was a hell of a racer, and I still like Tim. I wish he could've done the race with a more pleasant person. The ones I really wound up disliking, though, were Travis and Nicole. Nicole really sucked ass at tasks, and not just at the end when she might have been able to blame it on KF, but pretty much all the way through. And Travis just seems like a terrible, terrible husband. So belittling and unsupportive. Ugh. And they were moralizing hypocrites to boot. So glad that they didn't win. Their final chat with Phil was crazy uncomfortable.
Now, I am going to dig into megan walker's SYTYCD list. Sooo excited. S4 was totally a triumph of personality and charisma over choreography. It also ushered in the NappyTab reign of terror over hip hop choreo on the show. I rue the day that I rhapsodized over Bleeding Love.
kat,
FWIW, I watched the 2nd and 3rd eps of The Sing Off, but I didn't see the 1st. I liked the 2nd and 3rd eps quite a bit.
The Voice: Tessanne Chin made me choked up tonight. What a freaking voice. She's amazing.
The Sing-Off: I'm loving Home Free. The guy with the bass is insane.
I love the bass guy as well. But I really hate the lead singer, not because I don't like his voice, just because I knew too many of his type in my acting/singing past. So, I am neutral, my love/hate for one cancels out my love/hate for the other.
LOVED Vocal Rush's Holding Out for a Hero.
Is there any way Tessanne doesn't win this?
eta: though I have to say, after seeing the last song, I thought Jacque did a really amazing
job, and if anyone can give Tessanne a run for her money, it's Jacque.
I'm with Vortex on loving the bass, but hating the lead singer. He seems smarmy to me.
I hope I posted it here, but I've thought for a while that Tessanne should win, but Jacquie will win.
I'm totally Team Tessanne, but I wouldn't be surprised if Jacqui won. The Voice seems to have a slightly older voting demographic than Idol, though, and some older folks (well, Reality TV older) have won it in the past, so who knows? I am sure pulling for a Tessanne win, though. I don't think she's sung a bum note during the entire competition and her take on I Have Nothing almost made me not mad that Adam picked that tired AI retread as her final song.
I wouldn't be mad if Jacqui won. I love X-Tina and this has been her best outing as a coach ever. And Jacqui does have an amazing voice. She just needs more seasoning, as do all 16 year olds which is why I'm generally against them being on these types of shows. She totally went pageant-bot on that J-Holliday/J-Hud classic (and also went off key a couple of times once she started trying to belt). It was not pleasant to watch.
In other singing competition news, I loved, loved The Sing Off. Jewel is an excellent addition to the judges panel. She knows her stuff. I was impressed! My faves so far are the country group (the bass in that group is insane!) and Vocal Rush, the young kids. I thought they were super cute on Holding Out for a Hero and wouldn't have put them in the bottom 2, but since they were there, I got to see them destroy the girl group, which was really not all that, on Survivor and it was glorious right from the start when the little latina mocked the "Yes, Nick Lachey". Ha! I love spunk!
I'm sad that this show is so short. Is it really only two weeks long? That ain't right. We have to watch AI and The Voice for eternities. After this week's second show, we will be down to only 4 groups already, no? Too fast. I want more group singing. More Ben Folds. More Shawn Stockman in ridiculous purple paisley button downs.
