Ear infections aren't usually contagious per se. They usually are a secondary bacterial infection that occurs in the ear as a result of poor drainage. The primary infection is usually viral (a cold) (which is contagious, of course). Kids get them so much more often than adults because the tubes that drain the ears are really tiny in kids, so it's much easier to build up fluid that then festers from the zillions of bacteria that are hanging around the body anyway.
