Oh no, not the same bug at all, but (imho) almost as disturbing and possibly more common.

Ah, ok. Knowing they are under my feet somewhere doesn't bother me much, there are a lot of things down there, after all. if they start showing up on billboards trying to sell me soup or something, I will be disturbed.

It's a saddleback caterpillar and I've been stung by one twice. It's a very painful weird-ass bug.
That is a weird-ass bug but somehow the bright green makes it seem less creepy than the underground brown things.
