Experimental TV: Cable Drama

This thread is an experiment to discern the Buffistas' interests in television discussion. It will be closed on June 1st, 2007, after which our community will engage in creative discourse about the future direction of our boards. This is the thread for cable aired drama. All discussion must be in whitefont, with the name of the show upfront, for 24 hours after the show airs, presumably in the US. No future spoilers in thread (take those to the spoiler thread for serious ones or spoilers light for casting type info).

Punishingly Intricate

Not!Fiance killed me.

I really thought he was going to be a joke character but turns out he's not all about stapling his pants.

See? I gave everybody here an opportunity to tell me what a bad person I am and nobody did, because I fuckin' rule.

Not!Fiance killed me.

I really thought he was going to be a joke character but turns out he's not all about stapling his pants.

He's such a whiplash-inducing, but totally believable, mix of comic, tragic, deeply creepy (as when, a week ago, he told Didi about watching her dance in the moonlight and knowing he wanted to marry her all those long years ago when she was nine, maybe ten -- bent and unbearable and glimmering and poetic all at once), genuinely menacing (especially last night when he threatened his sister) and weirdly noble.

While we were watching, Hec groused a bit about how utterly stupid so many of the clan are, and how can they make a living as con artists if they're so damn dumb? Though ISTM from googling all over the internets about Travellers that that's not entirely inaccurate; they're not so much about grand elaborate cons a la The Sting as small-scale rook-the-mundanes-and-get-out-of-town-quick schemelettes. Which just makes me more interested in the backstory of Wayne the half-Traveller, who seems to have some background in classic Big Cons, and more eager to see how well or how horribly awry the Big Con goes next week.

Other thoughts: Dale is continuing to creep me right the fuck out. Such a sociopath. And it feels so hideously right that he not only killed the old man, but that he's still brimming with weepy self-pity and he's half-convinced himself he didn't do it at all. Dahlia singing "How Can I Keep From Singing?" broke me. Thank God she only did one verse; if she'd done the whole song, it'd have stomped me into little pieces. I love, love, love Didi and want to take her out for coffee and dark conversation and fussy cool-aunt demi-mothering.

And, completely randomly and trivially, just how tiny is Eddie Izzard? I'd never thought of Minnie Driver as particularly tall, but there are scenes where she's towering over him. It makes me grin helplessly for some reason (possibly residual Willow/Oz emotions, or who knows what).

"I'm useless alone." // "We're all useless alone. It's a good thing you're not alone."

He's a tiny man. There's an episode of the UK "Whose Line is it Anyway?" where he's like a head shorter than anyone else on the show.

Always Anti-fascist!

You know, I still love most the metaphor(being a Wirefiend who loved "I got the gun. You got the briefcase.") that maybe going straight is the toughest racket of all. And Fiance guy is not a con artist yet...he's the possibly retarded apprentice of one. Which also reminds me of The Wire, sort of. Because there was a time that Carver had a wire up on somebody and said "This guy is so dumb if he were one of ours, he'd be a colonel." EI's strong personality has kept me from noticing he's short.

See !! This is the part I missed last week! You came through, JZ, just a little on the delayed side! hee!

Izzard is teensy. That's the first thing I noticed about him on the show. Also, the actor who plays Cael. Little and tiny.

I love, love, love Didi and want to take her out for coffee and dark conversation and fussy cool-aunt demi-mothering

YES! Although I think she's probably a lot wiser than I'll ever be.

5'10" and EI is 5'7" as is Noel Fisher (Cael) according to IMDB. Noel Fisher is also 25.

Dahlia singing

OMG!!! Last week, with Dahlia singing "Jesus loves me, this I know," to Didi in the jail cell? HMOG, Minnie has an absolutely incredible voice.
