I had hoped that the flat way that ZD was acting was part of the story - that she'd improve once she started connecting to her past but I was wrong.

Judging from what Melina said, BBCA did, overall, a really excellent job with the cuts. But yeah, even knowing that they exist would drive me nuts. (Still moot, because I still don't have BBCA, and that makes me miffed.)

Really? You thought Deschanel was good? I thought she was stoned throughout the whole thing. And at the end of the second part, my reaction was a sort of spiteful, "Yeah. It is your fault."

I had the same reaction, but I attributed it more to the awfulness of the script: we'd just been shown a comparatively competently-written scene in which we learned that the evil sister's evil was all Wee!Zooey's fault, and the horrified look on Big!Zooey's face and her tears told us all we needed to know. Then the clunky script stepped in and insisted that, after eloquently showing us everything we needed to know and feel, she spell it out in anvils, sobbing, "I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry, my sister! It's all my fault!"

I felt a profound sense of Well, duh! but it was mostly directed at the screenwriters, who seemed to believe not in Show, Don't Tell, but in Show, Then Tell, Using Small Words Of Few Syllables But Making Sure To Use Lots Of Them.

And it happened over and over again throughout the entire six hours -- perfectly good actors with lovely expressive faces and voices being forced to laboriously restate in (barely adequately written) words what they'd just said with their bodies. It's like the screenwriters had no notion of what film as a storytelling medium is for. (Though Hec and I theorized that possibly the original script was fine, but then it got combed through by some suit who controlled a ton of money but had no idea how to read a script and who kept marking everything up with "I don't get it. I don't understand it. Audience will feel stupid. Say more!!!")

And man, Kathleen Robertson irritated me to death on 90210, and she irritated me here. She suffered badly from Glory Syndrome -- petulant and pouty but with exactly none of the gravity or menace the role desperately needed. Throughout the first episode I kept mentally replacing her with Claudia Black, which helped considerably; when I realized that she was supposed to be DG's slightly older sister I moved on to Amy Acker or Eliza Dushku, both of whom can do cold contempt, depthless murderous rage and remorseful hysteria about eighty billion times better than Robertson.

I have BBCA and will still watch them both ways. I still watch Buffy episodes on WX when I notice them with the DVDs on the shelf.
