Hey Kalshane, I managed to get my hands on an import copy of White Night this weekend. Woo! Spoilers:

Glad you enjoyed it. A lot of the setup for the main plot ofWhite Night occurs in Blood Rites so once you get to it it may feel like a retread.

I think that the names changed in the teleivsion show help me divorce the books from the show, which is a good thing. Where Dresden in the books reminds me (affectionately) of the D&D gamers and MtG players I grew up with, Dresden on the show reminds me more of a working class journeyman type. That's how Blackthorne plays him--like my uncles, down to earth and interested in the simple pleasures, but Dresden with duties beyond that. I like both of them, but they aren't always similar.

I think the two Harries are very similar in personality, but they've had different experiences and have different interests. Book!Harry is very much the archetypical geek, trading computers or what-have-you for magic. I prefer book!Harry, as he was who I "met" first, and because I share more in common with him. But I still enjoy watching TV!Harry and think Blackthorne does a great job.

Also, the difference in Terrance Mann being Bob and the Bob and the book is hugely, and, I think, necessary for the television show. TM gives the audience, and Dresden, someone to imprint on for all the super-magic stuff. He's more a teacher and less of an encyclopaedia, and in the context of the show I like that better.

Of all the changes, I actually think what they did with Bob on the show was excellent. Don't get me wrong, I love Book!Bob and would hate to lose his pervy little air spirit self from the books, but for a TV show it was a wonderful choice both a storytelling and budget perspective to make him into a "person". And Terrance Mann plays off Blackthorne beautifully.

This really makes me want to go back and watch everything again. And I still have like four or five Dresden books to get through--one of the things I love about both the books and the show is the interplay of politics. It's stuff that fascinates and entertains me.

Yeah, I'm envious of Butcher's ability to weave these complex political machinations into his stories. And if you really enjoy the politics, I think you'll really get a kick out of Summer Knight (book 4.)

For a minute there seeing The Gathering I thought they were doing a show about Magic

My brain went to a Highlander place, even though I had a brief stint playing Crack: The Gathering ages ago.

I thought I might, when I read in PG that it deals with the Faerie Courts and the history behind the relationships we see at Mac's. I'm really eager to read it, but I'm taking it slow, as I just started Fool Moon. Have you read Codex Alera, Kalshane? I've got them too.

Oh, I love them both. But the things that change their perspectives--the age at which they killed Justin, being in foster care versus being an adult, etc, changes the characters for me to a degree that allows for easy separatation. I love watching Blackthorne, though. I think he gets that Dresden sense of humour mixed with the weight of the world perfectly.

Yes. Though he is having second thoughts abot doing whatever the Priors say. Wait, no, there was something about him going with her but he didn't, I think he let her go?

2. Is Daniel Jackson still captured by Adria?

Yes, this one I'm pretty sure of. We didn't see him at all.

3. What was the line that they couldn't cross?

I don't know what that means. Cam not being willing to take the device back to SGC and leave Sam to die? I tried to fnd the recap on scifi.com to see if I could figure it out from that, but I couldn't.

He let her go at the very end of the ep (she ringed back to the village just before the Ori ship broke orbit), but I'm pretty sure she couldn't persuade him to come with her.

Oh, the one thing I loved about last week's ep but forgot to mention -- Merlin's casual "and so I set up a whole bunch of midieval villages all over the galaxy" thing. Finally, a reason why 99% of the inhabited universe looks like a Ren Faire!
