The PBS station here in Chicago is running "Doctor Who" on Sunday nights. (Starting with The Ninth Doctor) If memory serves, that was when I first was introduced to The Doctor some 25+ years ago. The 45 minutes episode was followed with the companion "Doctor Who Confidential" episode.

In Eugene, Oregon they are getting us the Doctor on PBS in the same 45 min chunks, followed by an abbreviated Confidential highlight reel (to fit in the remaining 15 min for the hour of programming time). The Confidentials seem a lot snappier at the shorter running time.

They run the Confidentials at 15 minutes on BBCTHREE too, when they're repeating and have an hour to fill. So it's a BBC edit.

Finally saw the whole Daleks in Manhattan episode last night. All my quibbles are Empire State Building related. You can't see it from Central Park! And the elevator doesn't go up to 100 floors, just 80 floors! (And then another six!).

Otherwise, I had no complaints.

Hey Kalshane, I managed to get my hands on an import copy of White Night this weekend. Woo! Spoilers: It moved really fast, especially because I was comparing it to Proven Guilty, which I had just finished a day or two before. And in addition to moving fast, it felt shorter. And the battle in the White Court caves was really cool, but very confusing--I couldn't track the action very well. Still, Butcher is wonderful with description and with humour, so I loved it on both those scores. And since I was reading Storm Front parallel with PG and WN, it's fascinating to see how much Harry has changed since these books began.

I think that the names changed in the teleivsion show help me divorce the books from the show, which is a good thing. Where Dresden in the books reminds me (affectionately) of the D&D gamers and MtG players I grew up with, Dresden on the show reminds me more of a working class journeyman type. That's how Blackthorne plays him--like my uncles, down to earth and interested in the simple pleasures, but Dresden with duties beyond that. I like both of them, but they aren't always similar.

Also, the difference in Terrance Mann being Bob and the Bob and the book is hugely, and, I think, necessary for the television show. TM gives the audience, and Dresden, someone to imprint on for all the super-magic stuff. He's more a teacher and less of an encyclopaedia, and in the context of the show I like that better.

This really makes me want to go back and watch everything again. And I still have like four or five Dresden books to get through--one of the things I love about both the books and the show is the interplay of politics. It's stuff that fascinates and entertains me.

Dr. Who S3: Isn't that Central Park left center? if the camera could see Central Park, then people in Central Park would have been able to see the ESB, no?
