Maybe I disagree with everyone.
Though I thought the finale fell just short of being perfect, I loved the ambiguity, and I have a very hard time looking at it as simply "Sam woke up, was too messed up to go on, and killed himself." The creators claim that they never intended it to be ambiguous about whether he was actually mad, in a coma, or back in time, but I think the show itself never really answered that question, and I much prefer it that way.
I am dubious
about the spinoff, but we'll see.

I'm not sure how that works in my brain, but it does.
However it works, it's also working in mine. That is to say, I loved it as well, despite my issues with the ending.

it keeps me thinking about it. I love(d) this show, and my hardcore gut reaction to the ending sort of speaks to my emotional investment.

Fandom has taught me many useful things.
From the beginning, I realized that I believed
that Sam was both in a coma and actually back in 1973. And possibly a little crazy. Nothing in the second series changed my mind on that.

According to a TV Guide piece on him, Fred Rogers drove a plain old Impala for years. One day, however, the car was stolen from the street near the TV station. When Rogers filed a police report, the story was picked up by every newspaper, radio and media outlet around town. Amazingly, within 48 hours the car was left in the exact spot where it was taken from, with an apology on the dashboard. It read, “If we’d known it was yours, we never would have taken it.”
