I was thinking about this yesterday. They do a good job of balancing the two characters, but I think S1 belonged to Sam and S2 belonged to Dean. And now we're swinging back to give S3 to improved!action!Sam.

That Sam=Wesley and Jake=Robot dad, but that might just be me.
Jake was everything Sam was afraid he would become. Killing him was a sign of the trademark Winchester self-loathing.
