I still think I'd go more conciliatory (in tone, NOT in what you're demanding). But that's just my own bent. Basically, though, you just need to hit a few points:
- The money situation has gotten confused.
- The deal was 50% less the transport ($150) and Joe's time.
- The simplest, most accurate way to deal is for him to document what was actually spent.
- Until that time, he shouldn't have your money.
