Spike's Bitches 35: We Got a History

[NAFDA] Spike-centric discussion. Lusty, lewd (only occasionally crude), risque (and frisque), bawdy (Oh, lawdy!), flirty ('cuz we're purty), raunchy talk inside. Caveat lector.

I'm not exactly an advocate of child-led education. I know where my kids would lead me if they could.

Ha!

Interesting discussion, as we've been talking seriously about home-schooling or unschooling. Especially since schools appear to be quite dangerous places...

I tend to be opposed to home or unschooling, because I think the socializing aspects of school, while not always pleasant, are valuable; because I never bought what Rousseau was selling anyway, and you absolutely cannot have a purely savage upbringing in the first world; because I don't plan on not teaching my son, I just plan on supporting and complementing what the school teaches; and because if I were to homeschool him, I would get paid even less than a teacher, which is a pretty amazing feat.

Get well wishes for all you sick Bitches!

Congrats, juliana!

Our wings are not tired.

happy birthday beth!

Kids are different. They learn in their own ways. I could have home schooled, but I chose sanity instead. At this point Brendon responds to bribery alone to keep him involved at any level in school. Zero interest or motivation. He does his work so he can play sports and have his phone and computer. Bobby has great curiosity about the world and has stores of knowledge from the Science, History, Animal Planet, Discovery, and other cable sources. Knows how to fix stuff from working with his dad, knows how to fly from paying attention to my pilot neighbor. Hates to read and getting him to write is like pulling teeth. His poor teachers. They will both learn what they want and need to make it in this world. I know I don't have what it takes to have home schooled, or unschooled them. I worship their teachers.

Eeep. Get packing Raq!

Now tagless for your comfort.

health-ma to Suzi's mom. And calm-ma for Suzi.

Happy Birthday, beth!

I'm in love with my prescription Ultram. It's the perfect pain-pill. Not too powerful but just enough to take care of my back issues and let me sleep and feel human when I wake up.

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

Happy Birthday, beth!

People on the morning radio show are trying to explain the right way to tie a necktie. They don't seem to understand that this is not something that can be explained without pictures.

Gronk. Need to teach this morning. Feeling way less like crap than the last few days, but still not quite up to dealing with over-stressed students cramminf for an exam.

Timelies, Bitches! Interesting discussion. I have nothing to add, because I don't know much about unschooling, but interesting to read.

Much ~ma to Suzi and Suzi's mom.

Oh, poor packing Bitches. Moving is so stressful.

Ok. Me must get back to work.

Ugh. Gio (dog next door) is whining again. At least he seems to stop after a couple hours.

And in D.C. we say: Woot!

Happy Birthday, beth!

My DH has a friend whose wife homeschools their four kids. The kids are weird - polite, but automatons - which I don't blame so much on the homeschooling as the wife. She's a horrible control freak and I think this is the reason she chose to homeschool, not the kids (their personalties or the way they learn best) or the schools they'd have to attend.
