He said a good way to get to know other major DC characters is via JLA.
The way JLA's been written lately, it's the surest, best way to hate character you used to like with a fiery, consuming passion.
OK, the horrendous Byrne/Claremont story is over, so maybe it'll get better. Maybe it'll just feel good when the pain goes away.
t pimp
You should read Outsiders. It's smart and snarky and fun. There's a tpb of the first 5 issues and title is at #13 or #14 so there isn't a huge amount to catch up on.

I should clarify -- he told me to read the first couple of TPBs of JLA.

Oh, that's different. All of the Grant Morrisson stuff is excellent. Same with the Mark Waid stuff that followed. The Joe Kelley stuff after that had some rough patches, along with a few brilliant moments. After that, we were subjected to drek. Pure, unadulterated rek.

I saw the first trade and read the introduction, and it definitely piqued my interest. Plus, there was some killer gorilla or something.
There was a killer gorilla ARMY.
It's lots of fun.
Get thee behind me, pimps!!!

After the last go 'round through JLA talk that mentioned Kelly, I dug out some of my issues from that run. While there are indeed rough patches (I'm never going to call plot the guy's strong suit) there were some interesting ideas and good takes on the characters and the relationships between them (I particularly dig how they all rib on Batman's OOOH Scary! image while being just a little scared of him). Plus when
Manitou Raven grows to enormous size to battle the evil Atlantean queen he yells 'INUKCHUK'
!
All that and Major friggin' Disaster too. I thought he did pretty well, all things considered, though I prefer his smaller scale stuff, like Deadpool. That was a sweet sweet run.

Major Disaster: "I'm a f$*#!ing super hero!"
Best. Line. Ever.
Also, the Platic Man/Batman story was excellent. A lot of good work there, which was completely undercut by what followed: a shape changing alien ape named Pepe, boring vampires and a reboot of the Doom Patrol that effectively erased any of their back story and took all the cool out of them. Blech.

Dude, they have a chapter called LAWYERS, GUNS, AND MONKEYS! You MUST read it.
And Grace has HUGE hands.
