Since this is sort of the unofficial comic book thread, I thought I'd ask--I just ordered the Sandman Volume One Preternatural-somthingorother. Was that a good choice for an intro to Sandman?
Preludes and Nocturnes?
I think general consensus is that it's not the best of the Sandman series, but it's still worth reading. The whole thing picks up momentum with the last issue of that collection. "The Sound of Her Wings" (I think, memfault.)
The real problem is that once you start, you can't stop.
That's a problem?
Preludes & Nocturnes isn't the strongest of the series, but it's such an arcy series that I think it's worth reading them in order.

Okay, because there's like nine more volumes after this one plus random extra ones, so I figured I'd go in order.
There are two that are collections of short stories (Dream Country and I can't remmeber the name of the other one), and they're good, but not strictly necessary. And A Game of You is also kind of tangential to the main arc (some people really like that one -- it's never been one of my favorites).
Everything else is absolutely essential.
There goes my paycheck.
Amazon tends to bundle two books together and offer them at a slight savings. Bastards.
Yeah, but I'm into supporting my local comic book store, considering the store just opened and they guy is really cool.
The second collection, A Doll's House, has the stories that really knocked my socks off and made me a Sandman fan. Season of Mists is also very good.
