This is true. The concept has definitely evolved since the early days. These days, the X-Men are teachers/field operatives, with other mutants being the students.

Which, really, makes more sense.

I'm unsure how this is working with the reboot. Some of the original New Mutants will be running Academy X. What is that ass Scott going to be doing with Emma? Other than ill-considered nookie?

Well, Mon El (aka M'onel aka Valor aka whatever other name they want to use to erase his past history) chose star spanning superherodom over life on Daxam. Daxamites get the same powers as Kryptonians when they leave the homeworld, so it's a similar choice.
