Y'know I grew up reading superhero comics and yet I can't give much of a damn about them now. Except Promethea, but that doesn't really count.

Well, I wouldn't say *plenty*. And it was a while ago. And without the benefit of wacky fandom theories & analysis, which just might make all the difference.
However, I think I need to re-read all of Sandman, Promethea, and Transmetropolitan. And possibly Stray Toasters.

I'd borrow the later volumes if I were you. After starting off disguised as a mystical superheroine comic it turns a corner around issue 8 into full-on mysticism.
The history of the world told through the Major Arcana of the Tarot (in numerical sequence) was quite breathtaking storytelling.
Of course, that still may not be to your taste, but Promethea has always struck me as a comic whose first volume is a far cry from the nature of the series as a whole.
And possibly Stray Toasters.
I adore that series beyond all reason. But, hey, big Bill S. (cause I'm never going to get that name right from memory) fan, so it goes hand in hand.
