There's a pair or two that nest in the ravine off and on. I can remember at least twice them raising a chick where you could see the nest from the lobby with binoculars. When they start hanging around, facilities often puts tassles on the windows because while the hawks have never injured themselves, it's really really freaky when one hits.
Oh! One year? The female took to hunting by dropping off the roof. So you'd be looking out the window and this missile would hurtle pass. It was awesome.
These guys don't look that big from a distance (they aren't golden sized or anything, maybe a foot and a half) but when one of them is at the top of the stairs with its wings spread over a squirrel? Freaking HUGE.
Yeah, but how do you feel about having your ear flicked by a prehensile tail?
Less excited.
I had the thought that if Jesse didn't put this at number one, I wouldn't know what was real anymore. I mean, monkeys and cats are already sleeping together!
Aw. Now I miss the Quiet Storm on Power 99FM in Washington DC, from about 10 years ago. That was some good times.
Birds of prey know they're cool.
That was one of my most favorite Far Sides.
We get red tails almost every day over the lab, and sometimes hanging out on the freeway lightpoles looking for lunch or dinner in the landscaping.
Caught a little bit of a raptor Nature the other night - they rigged up a wee camera on the back of a redtail, and then on a peregrine falcon. So cool.
I am setting my iPod to emo, and none of you can stop me!
We can still point, and mock and laugh though, right?

I saw that one! Or at least part of it. Every.single.time the bird dove, I caught my breath. It's amazing.
The birdcam in general was just awesome.
Seriously cool. I wish I could fly.
Caught a wee bit of the David Attenborough Eagle special afterwards, which was also really neat. How the HELL does his team get all that crazy closeup footage?

Most of it is shot in-studio.

And since World's Most Expensive Food Things are always on-topic -- the world's most expensive pancake!
CHEF Alex Lovell has created a pancake for Shrove Tuesday for those with expensive taste.
It costs a pan-sizzling £95.
Alex, aged 21, who turned down a job with Gordon Ramsay to join the Earlsdon Cottage, in Warwick Street, used some of the bar's costliest ingredients to come up with his gourmet recipe.
He said: "I just wanted to make something really special for Pancake Day.
"I don't know whether we will sell any - it does cost about a tenner a mouthful - but a few of our customers shared one and thought it was wonderful.
"The jelly accompanying the pancake contains Dom Perignon Champagne, which costs £110 a bottle, the fruit, black cherries, strawberries and raspberries, are flambéed in Louis XIV cognac which costs £100 a shot, the batter contains Madagascar vanilla pods, which cost a fiver a pod. And it's all accompanied by amaretto ice cream."
[Between the champagne, the cognac, and the amaretto, it sounds to me like an excuse to get smashed at breakfast, doesn't it?]
