I don't think he was translating on the fly. I think the speech had already been written and rehearsed since this was a lifetime achievement award, and then translated in advance.

Well, yeah. That would be the other explanation for how come the first chunk of speech was really long in Italian, but really short in English....

Well, I wasn't impressed by The Departed, and actually stopped watching Babel at some point. I still haven't seen The Queen or Letters, though, so maybe I'd like them more. But it seems like LMS is winning a bunch of stuffs.
