Take jobs as they come -- and we'll never be under the heel of nobody ever again. No matter how long the arm of the Alliance might get, we'll just get ourselves a little further.

RIVER RAFTING ANNOUNCEMENT: I'm hosting a river rafting trip down the South Fork of the American River with a friend who is a guide with Friends of the River, a non-profit group. We are still deciding among Aug. 23 & 24, Sept. 6 & 7, and Sept. 13 & 14 as the dates, and want to find out when the most # of people can come. Aug. is nice and hot, a good time to be on a river. Sept. will be a tiny bit cooler, maybe/probably - depending on Indian Summer heat waves.

FOR rafting is technically free, though Friends of the River hope people will make a ~$35 donation (the cost of an annual membership). I'll be getting Fri. and Sat. night campsites at Camp Lotus, which is $8/person. It's easily possible to drive up early/raft all day/drive back to Bay Area in one day, but is also nice to get up there Fri. after work, sleep by the river, and then shower/hang out after rafting all day and come back leisurely on Sunday.

If you're interested, send me an email and let me know what date is best for you.

eta: commercial outfitters cost $160-$120 and include lunch. We will brown bag/potluck it.

Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

In re Thanksgiving in Jamaica: I have been checking out packages and working out how to work the system to get the most vacation/services for the least amount of money. I'm only investigating Negril, since (a) Ochos and Mo Bay are big, Miami Beach-like tourist areas (relative to Negril), which I dislike, and (b) I know Negril pretty well. I've gotten prices for NYC and LAX as departure cities, with 11/22-11/30 as travel dates.

Prices are coming out around $100/day to $150/day, depending on where one stays. The West End, which IMHO is nicer anyway, is a little cheaper. This includes 9 nights, round trip air fare, and transfers from Mo Bay to Negril, and back.

My question is, who, if anyone, is interested? I'll pursue this more if there's continued interest. Flights back on 11/30 are booking up (afternoon flights are already gone) so we'll need to move on it fast if it's going to happen. Please discuss in F2F.

To understand what happened at the diner, we shall use Mr. Papaya! This is upsetting because he's the friendliest of fruits.

It's with great pleasure that we can announce the online preview for Word Street Magazine, viewable at:

[link]

Word Street, projected to launch this Autumn, intends to do for poetry what Rolling Stone did for Rock 'n' Roll, promoting the and supporting the spread of live poetry events and spoken word as a medium of entertainment, and a means of social change, while exploring its relationship to alternative politics & culture, freedom of speech and civil rights.

That's the mission statement, but the Web site speaks best for itself. In our online premier, you'll find an amazing array of stories, including:

  • A National Poetry Slam Preview, brought to you by Deborah Edler Brown, Phil West and Guy Gonzalez

  • An interview with poet/activist Jerry Quickley on his recent trip to Iraq, by Patricia Smith

  • Cass King's ever-popular sex column, Organ Grinder.

  • Guest-Columnist Jillian Venters (aka Gothic Miss Manners) telling us the best way to react to your friend's bad poetry

  • A review of Spoken Word Revolution by G. Murray Thomas, and more

Within the next few weeks, we'll be spreading the word on subscription information, and will soon be moving to our own domain name.In the mean time, enjoy, and let us know your thoughts at ocvictor2002@yahoo.com.
