And you're sure this isn't just some fanboy thing? 'Cause I've fought more than a couple pimply, overweight vamps that called themselves Lestat.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

X-posted with the Somervillains email list:

Yes, Deb Grabien is in town and she is staying at Chez B & FAQ-Wife. We would be happy to host a post dinner get-together at our house this Saturday night, Dec. 10. I thought we could go out to dinner somewhere nearby -- Elephant Walk maybe? -- and then proceed to our house for dessert and other goodies.

In other news, I will be performing Christmas Carols, along with some punk and new wave hits, with my trusty theremin the following day, Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Cyclorama in the South End as part of the Bazaar Bizarre, the hipster crafts fair. I'll be doing three short sets, tentatively scheduled for 2pm, 4pm, and 6:20pm. [link]

In other other news, I'll be donning my Santa cap once again as a tour guide for the Somerville Illuminations Holiday Lights tour. I will be on trolley B for the 6:15pm and 8:45pm tours. Tickets go on sale today and it does sell out fairly quickly. If you'd like to go, but can't easily get to Davis Square to buy tickets, let me know and I'll get them for you (you can pay me back the night of the tour). [link]

I hope you can make one or more of these events! RSVP is requested but not mandatory. Questions, etc. should go to the F2F thread or email.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Since some of you are already 1947 fans, I'll post Kim's email request here:

***********

Gentle reader,

As you may know, I maintain, with my demented little buddy Nathan, an historical true crime blog called 1947project. Each day we feature a forgotten Los Angeles crime from 1947, and quite often we visit the scene and share how it looks today.

Thanks in large part to the kind readers who nominated us last week, we are officially in the running for a Gridskipper Urb award as one of the Best Los Angeles Blogs. Yea! Only we are up against our pal Rodger at 8763 Wonderland. Boo!

In any case, we'd really appreciate it if you could click over and, if you like what we're doing at 1947project, cast a vote before December 26.

Our catagory, Best Los Angeles Blog, is near the bottom of the page, under Best New York Blog, here:

thanking you in advance for your vote, I am, yr pal, Kim Editrix

Trust my rage

Some of you already know about this but for those who don't:

My husband, Joe, took a coffee roaster and about 1000 lbs of green bean coffee with him to Iraq last year. In addition to his official job predicting the actions of insurgents, he also set-up and ran a coffee roaster and espresso bar which they called Blackjack Java. It was a big hit over in LSA Anaconda, where he was stationed.

He has spent literally (almost) every hour since he got back setting up the roaster here in North Carolina. Joe has spent many hours dreaming about making this work and it is wonderful for me to see him finally have the chance to actually do it.

With that lead in, I invite you all to go check out www.simcoffees.com The website still has a few bugs/typos, but we are finally ready to sell some fresh-roasted coffee (at least via paypal. We will be taking credit card payments sometime in the next few days.) If you like good coffee, this is really good coffee and the fresh-roasted part makes a difference. If you don't like coffee normally, this is still good coffee. (I'm a non-coffee drinker myself but I actually like this stuff. Joe says it's something about the combination of high quality beans and fresh roasting.)

also, IIRC it's okay for me to push something I'm doing here. If I'm wrong, however, I'll be happy to delete.

Our wings are not tired.

Copying Jessica's idea and posting invitation to receive a holiday card from me.

If you would like to receive a holiday card featuring a photograph of the Holt family please let me know your address via profile address. I would just send a bunch to the addresses I have collected, but it seems bordering creepy to me to send a family picture unsolicited. I could send not so personal cards, but I probably won't get around to it.

So, if ya send me email I'll send ya snail mail. (non usians more than welcome)

Sometimes evil drives a minivan.

It is time to start planning for the 2006 Browncoat Ball!

The Inaugural Browncoat Ball (BCB) was held in Chicago in 2004, bringing together Browncoats from throughout the ’verse to celebrate all things Firefly.

From the start, the Browncoat Ball Committee’s goal was for different regional fan groups to host the fan-run, nonprofit BCB each year to give Browncoats the chance to travel to and explore shiny new places.

The BCB was not held in 2005 in deference to fans who were planning Mighty Fine Shindigs to promote the premiere of Serenity in their hometowns, so the Browncoat Ball Committee is more excited than ever about BCB 2006. We are seeking proposals from fan groups that would like to host BCB 2006.

Applicants should send a proposal with the following information:

  • Proposed dates for the event (a nonholiday weekend in August, September or October).

  • Proposed location, including the city and, if possible, a specific hotel that would have reasonable rates and at least 20-25 rooms available for the proposed dates.

  • Estimate on the total cost of a ballroom/banquet facility that has availability during the proposed dates, including room rental and catering.

  • A list of 3-5 additional Firefly ‘verse-themed activities that could be done at or near the BCB site and an estimate and explanation of the costs associated with these activities (for example, transportation to and from the event, admission fees, food charges, decoration costs). Think creatively! Some of the best activities cost very little, can be tied in easily with the Firefly ’verse and don't require a ton of planning (for example, the 2004 BCB included a Chinese Welcome Dinner and Tea Ceremony, the Train Job Luncheon and an Afternoon in the Core). The sky is the limit. This can be more of a brainstorming list of possible activities rather than a final list.

  • Additional transportation details such as how far the BCB site is from a major national/international airport, what transportation options exist to and from the airport and how much they cost, and how far the site is from other major cities within driving distance.

  • Total estimate on the operational costs (not including lodging) and estimate of ticket cost, including possible options for different event packages.

  • Coordinating Committee: A tentative list of the people willing to:
- make facility reservations and coordinate event planning; - register guests; - promote the event, including Internet updates, newsletters and invitations; - handle incoming and outgoing money and create and work within a budget (treasurer); - serve on the coordinating committee in a support capacity: at least two coordinating committee members need to live/work near the site being proposed.

  • Contact information, including name, e-mail address and evening phone number, for one member of the coordinating committee who will serve as a contact for notification purposes.

  • A statement from the group about why it would like to host BCB 2006.

Applications should be e-mailed to: info@browncoatball.com (with "BCB 2006 Proposal" in the heading).

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Jan. 21, 2006.

Decision process: The Browncoat Ball Committee will review the proposals and make a final selection on the site for BCB 2006 around Jan. 31, 2006.

Please send an e-mail to info@browncoatball.com if you have any questions.

Thank you to everyone who will consider hosting BCB 2006 or a BCB in the future.

Best of luck to all applicants!

Just in case anyone checks here before turning on NY1....express buses (Jamaica Buses and Triboro Coach Lines) are on strike, but the subways are running. So far.
