And almost sixty-five percent of that was actual compliment. Is that a personal best?

Not so nice is that I'm about to ruin a Friday morning for a bunch of people because of a series of unfortunate events and an upset foreign government. - shrift

Hooray for cake! I had a two-bite carrot cake this evening in your honor, and because I wanted it. It sounds like your birthday was perfectly pleasant.

Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Not someone with a birthday, awesome though she is. The hint was that she DEFINES awesome.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

It sounds like your birthday was perfectly pleasant.

It was! I had three migraines, but they were brief and responsive to abortives. The bar might be set low, but I cleared it with flying colours.

Hmm. What's the origin of "with flying colours," I wonder...

eta: Maybe Robin's skating partner would know...

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

I'm glad you had a nice birthday!

I bet Robin's partner was erinaceous!

Yes, Liese! How completely lucky am I? It was great fun and she is excellent company, on the rink or off. And a styling chick who has some fab moves. I am very grateful she drove all the way from Anaheim on a rainy night after flying all the way here. We had some terrific conversation and hang time. She said to tell the LAistas she'd be emailing folks once she knows her schedule.

edit: Nevermind, Liese and ita are better with the clues than I.

What's the origin of "with flying colours," I wonder...

The Oxford English Dictionary says "[i]t is a military metaphor for leaving the battlefield still in possession of one's flag." It apparently was an army thing from the 17th century.

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

Oo, Robin, I am jealous! What a lovely evening.

ita, I'm glad there was cake, and that the migraines were on their best behavior.

So lucky! What fun!

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

It'd be okay. The problem would come when you had to keep changing the kid's name every other month when a new version of the product came out.

Or the company gets bought -- isn't that what happened to the new Boston Garden? It was the Fleet Center? But then there was no more Fleet Bank? Edit: Oh yeah, that's tragic: now it's the "TD BankNorth Garden." [link]

Sounds fun, Robin! You found just the right lure for her!

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

I see that people both came up with my naming solution for the twins and my guess as to who Robin's skating partner did. Still, even though I was beat to it, I have the satisfaction of knowing I came up with the "right" answers.

Hell, I'll take my satisfaction whereever I can possibly shoehorn in the slightest amount of satis.

Today will be enlivened with a visit to an orthopedist to try to figure out what is wrong with my shoulder, which is still hurty if I try to stretch my arm too high overhead or touch my opposite shoulder blade. If it was just that it hurt when I threw a javelin, I'd give up javelin-tossing, but I'm too young to have to give up reaching for stuff on the top shelf, you know? I suppose there's going to be x-rays and or MRIs and fun stuff like that there. I suppose a small amount of shoulder-ma would be in order....
