Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
oh, you'd have to get an RF converter.
Megan, I'd ask around to friends. I wouldn't be surprised if someone had an old VCR in their garage or a closet that they're not using since they got DVR or Tivo. Hell, if you lived here, I'd give you my old one.
Megan, I have a dvr that has a Hard drive & DVD burner. It is standard definition. I'm getting to be an HD snob, and am considering getting rid of it. It would work for you if you have cable. But not if you are pulling from the air, with the DTV tranition.
I was sort of hoping that TiVo would come out with some new version that my housemate would (naturally) have to have.

Philips DVDR3575H/37 Hard Disk/DVD Recorder
The Philips DVDR3575H/37 DVD Recorder is one of the few new DVD Recorders that includes an ATSC Tuner as well as a Built-in Hard Drive. The Philips recorder can tune Over-the-Air digital broadcasts, including HD broadcasts and record them to either DVD disc or the built-in 160GB hard drive. Those HD recordings can then be upscaled in full 1080p to a compatible 1080p HDTV. This DVD Recorder with Built-in Hard Drive can Pause Live TV, but does not have an Electronic Programming Guide and includes one tuner. Recordings must be programmed manually like a VCR, and only one show can be recorded at a time. The plus, no monthly fees for the Philips DVDR3575H/37 DVD Recorder.
Polaroid DRA-1601A Hard Disk/DVD Recorder
The Polaroid DRA-1601A DVD Recorder is the other new DVD Recorder that includes an ATSC Tuner as well as a Built-in Hard Drive. The Polaroid recorder can tune Over-the-Air digital broadcasts, including HD broadcasts and record them to either DVD disc or the built-in 160GB hard drive. Those HD recordings can then be upscaled in full 1080p to a compatible 1080p HDTV. As with the Philips machine above, this DVD Recorder with Built-in Hard Drive can Pause Live TV, but does not have an Electronic Programming Guide and includes one tuner. Recordings must be programmed manually like a VCR, and only one show can be recorded at a time. The Polaroid DRA-1601A also has no monthly fee.
Yeah, it pretty much sucks.
Omnis, that would be awesome!
Polaroid DRA-1601A Hard Disk/DVD Recorder
Why am I picturing some monster device that takes a Polaroid picture of each frame?
Hmmm... an hour's worth of TV would be 108000 pictures....
Polaroid has a new "instant digital" camera out, FYI... [link]
I'm glad they're positioning themselves that way.
