I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop running Vista, it's over a year old.
I turned it on this afternoon and it was fine, then I went to click on something and download something and the screen sort of winked and then everything was black and white. All of it. I restarted and the same thing.
I have a LCD monitor hooked up and the color is fine there. But there's no color (just black and white and shades of gray) on the screen of the laptop.
Any suggestions ? Is this bad?
Are you getting your regular desktop? Is everything working, just the graphics are in grayscale?
Everything is in black and white and gray -- icons, desk top, the Start button, all the icon son the tray at the bottom.
If I move something like Firefox over so it's in black and white on the laptop and in color on the lcd.
Actually right now I9 have skype open and it's all gray scale on the laptop, I have Firefox open on the lcd and it's in color. If I move switch them around, then Skype would be in color and Firefox in black and white.
Try right-clicking on the desktop and checking out the settings under Graphic Properties, and also under Personalize.
When I go to Personalize Window Color and Apperance, it's all gray scale as well. I'm not sure what settings or things I'm supposed to look to see if something is wrong or to change something.
So the rumors are flying hard and fast that the new Mac Mini will be released tomorrow. I hope so; I've had an empty spot on my TV stand for one for months now...

So I've learned something new about the monitor situation.
When I turn it on, everything is in color until it gets to the sign on screen where it wants my password, then it's all gray scale.
I'm frustrated becuase this computer is not that old and also, I can't afford to replace it. And then there's this lady at work who bought a new Mac laptop, I'm not sure which one but it was $1900. She kept it, sealed in the box, for a month and then decided she didn't really want a Mac and of course the store wouldn't take it back and now she wants to sell it.
I'm trying to imagine a life where I have the kind of money I can just, basically, throw away $2000. She's trying to sell it at cost. But still, to spend that much money and then just let something sit, never opening the box.
I hope I never get that wasteful.

That would seem to confirm it's a personal setting or theme, not a system or hardware problem.
To confirm, try creating a new account, see if it looks and works normally?
In the old account, try changing to a different theme?
