Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

My AVG free won't update its spyware or virus databases anymore, either scheduled or on demand. I can't find mention anywhere of Free being discontinued, but I can barely find mention of Free anywhere.

Am I SOL for free anti-virus, or should I regard this as a temporary glitch and keep hammering away?

If it doesn't work, is there anything else good and free out there? Don't want to spend money if I can possibly avoid it.

ita, are you using AVG 7 or 8? They may have stopped issuing updates for 7. Updates on 8 work for me. Other than that, got nothing, besides doing a reinstall.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

I think O is right. You need to upgrade to v8.

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

Avast! is free, and works pretty well.

It's 8--I even re-downloaded and re-installed. I ended up downloading the update files manually and updating them that way, but that's no long term solution.

Is anyone here using Tivo with an interior antenna and an analog television? I recently set up a new HDTV in my office, where I don't have cable, and with the $25 Phillips HDTV antenna, the picture on the digital channels is amazing and I get at least as many as on basic cable. I am thinking about getting a Series 3/HD Tivo and booting Comcast. (Yes, I am trying to save money without actually giving up anything.)

Great. My PC is riddled with viruses that AVG can't get rid of. Most irritating is Cryptor which lives in /resycled/ntldr.com. But there are more, and other than moving them to the vault repeatedly (it keeps getting recreated) I can't get any other action to take, including removing the threat.

And now Windows Defender won't update either...

I'll give that a try, DCJ.

I downloaded Avast and ran a boot scan. It found something else, and seems to have cleaned that, but the Cryptor remains, not even found by Avast.

A quick google found several examples where Malwarebytes successfully removed Cryptor specifically.
