Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
Hmmm... I ordered a higher-end one, but my TV is a Sony which is hopefully common enough that it can be reliably controlled.
Yeah, ND (as ita said) blamed his TV, and was not happy about returning the remote. His TV was way off brand. If yours is a Sony, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.
Thanks, ita & Sean. Sleep will not be lost.
I need to get a new battery for my (old) laptop. I saw one listed on eBay with a "runtime of 1:20". Isn't that low?
Any idea how long should a battery for a ThinkPad last?
1:20 does seem very low. Though I know nothing of ThinkPads.
Question for the more techy among us: for work, we're using this website for some data. Involves a lot of page views, and clicking, and entering stuff. Kinda similar to Buffistas, in that way. :) The company has not been the most helpful or useful when we've had questions of how to do stuff, unfortunately (from designing the program to other things). Currently, the package we have includes a shared server. But we've been having a lot of issues with slowness and occasionally being completely unresponsive. Yesterday it stopped working at all, and they claimed it was because the server accidentally "got full". Um. Right.
So, my question being, does this sound like something a dedicated server would help? What kind of difference in price seems reasonable (v. roughly) to do that? Clearly we are paying them for other things in addition to simply the server space--the other things are really the bulk of the contract, but we're getting seriously fed up with the slowness--not only does it make it frustrating for the people who are putting stuff in there, it makes it very slow for me and my colleagues to review it--and we're required to review it while we're at the various sites, so if it's that slow or kicking us off, the trips have to be longer (or are wasted entirely).
Yeah, my TV is a 42" ESA Plasma TV. It's the company that makes the panels for Aiwa so it's got a good image, but the control interface for it leaves a lot to be desired. The Logitech controlled it, but the TV is not consistent in how long it takes to respond to certain commands so it just didn't play well with the remote. Trust me, I want to replace the TV just so that I can get a model that will work the remote, it's THAT cool.
That may be the best "but I
need
a new TV" excuse I've ever heard. Look out, Kristin.
I love my wee remote. It's almost as well-designed as the TiVo one (god, that's brilliant) and considering it's a major compromise by definition that's an achievement.
Oh trust me, she's heard the excuse. We still don't have a new TV. She also doesn't see how a 50" TV would be SO much better than the one we have.

It would clearly be 8 better! Just look at the numbers!
I love my wee remote.
This takes me to a place of "I love my wiimote". Which I do.
