"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

Do you need a whole DVD or could you convert video to avi? It would take up a heckuva lot less space if it is just 1 video you need as opposed to a true dvd with extras/subtitles, etc.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

You'd think so, but that would require me to be working for a company not operating under the Insane Troll Logic Manifesto.

These aren't commercial DVDs, LeN - all that's on them is the video.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

then, I think you should compress the video some if it is allowed. It would take up a whole lot less space and would be easier to download and stream.

Well...huh. According to the math I just did, the disc image method would take 217 business days.

Encoding to QT would take 700.

Eep.

(This is assuming my co-worker and I have 2 person-hours a day each to do this, which is optimistic given our current workload. Did I mention EEP?)

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

Take those numbers, including the cost for the server space (include backup, if necessary!) and you and your coworkers' time at your pay rates, and bring them to your boss.

Then give them the cost of a bookshelf.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Or you could try this: Get a bunch of rack servers for all the disk space you'll need. Then get some concrete blocks, and turn the rack servers into shelves.

HA. I love this.

Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

217 business days.

You thought I was kidding about the "spending the next year digitizing" comment?

Then give them the cost of a bookshelf.

Liese is wise. And just the right kind of snarky.

I'm very impressed by your accuracy!

It's not so much the cost of a bookshelf as it is the physical space it would take up. Our department is pretty much the redheaded stepchild of the company and is expected to take up as little space as possible so the grown-ups can get real work done.
