NASA: Hubble Space Telescope's Reboot Going Well
NASA's long-distance effort to revive the ailing Hubble Space Telescope is going well, with the orbital observatory on track to resume science observations by week's end, agency officials said Thursday.
The two-day repair began early Wednesday as NASA engineers began commanding Hubble from the ground to switch to a backup system after its main data relay channel failed last month. But remote control fix is tricky, requiring systems to power up after nearly two decades of hibernation.
Wow, booting up hardware that's been sitting dormant in space for 20 years....
Has anyone else been having issues with their Tivo lately? Mine has been recording reruns of TDS and Colbert that are clearly not on the To-Do List.

People were a little bit...stressed. (The actual work took 2 days, but the testing and planning took much longer.) But that's what a side B is for! And btw, it worked. Science operations are in fact resuming tonight. Yay data!
(I should not have read the comments on that article. Could-do-it better stupidheads who don't know of what they speak.)
So I left the router alone and didn't use wireless for about 24 hours. It worked just fine when I fired up both laptops this morning to check. The good news is I have wireless. The bad news is that I have no idea why I didn't yesterday.
Cash -- could have been some kind of interference from a neighbor's electronics. Or, perhaps, the Communists.
TiVo issues: Mine has been refusing to admit that anything has thumbs ratings, even though I wiped out all the previous thumbs and rethumbified enough shows. It's an S1, so I suppose it's just aging out of usefulness. SIGH
An awesome bit of DIY-ishness... worth clicking on just for the video.
Blender Defender - Keeping cats off kitchen counters
Hi MAKE! I just finished the web page for my latest project: the Blender Defender. I have a problem with my cat jumping up on the counter and eating my plant up there, so I pointed a network camera at it and ran some motion detection software. As soon as my computer detects motion on the counter, it sends a signal to turn on an extremely loud blender and a strobe light, scaring the cat off the counter.
From the video, it appears to be very effective.

I didn't think Cash lived that close to Canada.
My normal method for making my router come back to life is the turn it off, turn the computer off, turn it back on, then turn the computer back on. Sometimes I have to do this more than once. I suspect the computer just needs attention.
