Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
On (I think it was) Evil Jimi's recommendation, last year I switched over to Host Affection. I have the "Executive Plan". $30/year, but GREAT service. They always answer my tech questions fast and well. I've rarely had any downtime, and when I have, it's been up again minutes later without any prompting from me. They're owned by Steadfast Networks who seem to be quite reliable.
I can't speak to their support of Mac development tools, but you could certainly ask them and see what they tell you.
I've been super-pleased with Dreamhost.
I want to second Evil Jimi's rec - Host Affection has worked well for me. Heard good things about dreamhost from others besides Jilli though.
Dreamhost is where I put provocateuse. Been great.
I use Dreamhost and have been well pleased with it. But--and this won't apply to you, ND, or at least I doubt it will--over the last month they've been going through certain users' accounts and looking for reasons to delete their files for TOS violations. But folks that have been cleverer about their files have gotten through unscathed. Anyway, it's a result of DH offering these huge service plans, with loads of space and bandwidth, figuring no one would actually need or use that much space, and then running out of bandwidth and room because, whaddaya know, people actually did use what they were offering.
Which is not to say don't go to Dreamhost. It's just a note about how they've been operating.
I just moved to Dreamhost, and have been very pleased.
Interesting note on the Firefox 2.0 troubles--I'm running 2.0 on my Ubuntu partition, and using it the same way I use FF in Windows, ie running about 80 tabs and a fair number of extensions, it's almost no drain on the CPU. Certainly no comparison to the constant restarting I have to do in Windows with only even five tabs! So I wonder if it's just a Windows build thing.
I like Dreamhost a lot, I use it for my Spring Awakening site.
I switched over from eHostPros to Dreamhost a while back, and have been very happy with them. (I don't use iWeb, but their control panel has always played nicely with my Mac.)
I wish I'd gotten a huge bandwidth Dreamhost account. I must have missed that promo.
