Oh! Yeah, sorry, I didn't realize what you meant.
Yes, you need iTunes to put files on the iPod. The iPod can also be used as a little USB key type thing, holding any file, but they only play if the iPod has them in its "there be music here!" database, which is built by iTunes.
You can play mp3s just fine (no paying) if you have iTunes, you just have to show iTunes where they are.
Dragging them into the iPod thing via Windows Explorer puts them on the drive, but doesn't make the iPod know they are musics, so it ignores them.
As to how you deal without being able to install iTunes... no idea. There may be programs you can put on without being an administrator that can talk to it, but I not be a Windows guy, so don't know for sure. I know that once upon a time the non-Itunes iPod software goto was EphPod, which can maybe install without an admin account, but I make no promises, guarantees, or insinuations.
cool, thanks Gris. I'll give dowloading itunes a try when I get home tonight.
Laga, let me know if you want help. It looks like I have evenings off this weekend. Especially if there is any left over lasagna ;)
Hey, o_a, give me a call if you've got a minute.
P-C,

The leftover lasagna from last night got left at Darrin's place.
The tray I froze is reserved for when Berto's jaw gets unlocked but I will let you know when that is in case you're free.
But don't depsair if you miss it: it was delicious but it could have been so much better. I will be making it again soon with requisite changes.

Holy shit, that's amazing. Thank you!!
Argh. I dropped my Treo coming out of the subway this morning and the battery popped out. No biggie - I picked up the pieces and put it back together.
And now none of the keys work. [edit: Actually, the center button works. But none of the others. So not very useful.]
If the phone is off, I can use the "on" button to turn it back on, but once there, I can't navigate using anything but the touchscreen. Meaning I can't leave the phone application (which is what boots up by default when you restart), unless someone sends me a text message, in which case I can go to that text message, but then I can't get out of the text application unless I restart the whole thing.
WTF? Any suggestions? I'm planning on showing it to the guys at the Verizon store on my lunch break, but since I didn't sign up for the warranty, I have a feeling they won't be able to help.
Just got my cable bill. It costs me $20 a month for DVR rental and service through Charter. Tivo would pay for itself in less than 3 years. Guess I need to order that.
Okay, Mac heads...
I'm picking up a refurbed 15" Macbook.
I'm also thinking of picking up a refurbed AirportExtreme base station, to be the backbone of a network that would include the Macbook, a MacBook Pro, a MacMini, and will be the wireless print server for the apartment.
Do I need a base station, or would an Express serve my needs?
Do I need the Extreme card for the Macbook, and the 802.11n upgrade if I get the base station? Would I need those if I got the express instead?
Argh, buying computers is hard.
