I decided to splurge on myself yesterday and got the upgrade to leopard, and airport base and airport card at the mac store yesterday.
I updated my OS, but then I was sleepy and so didn't really understand how to set up the airport. Do I just put the card in, plug the airport into my modem and go? Is it as simple as I think it is? I'm tired of being tethered to my desk!

Do you have to install some special program to configure the Airport Base? I had to for my Time Capsule. But once I did that, it was absurdly simple to set up.

Nope. The card is the hardware part for the laptop. The software that you noticed is (probably) for configuring the airport base station.
I don't think any configuration is required for the airport card on the laptop, btw.
