ETA: I was able to get it back! I looked in the Finder and there was a label for "Today." It had an AutoRecovery version of the file. Thank God!

Well, the top of the list is always other contacts signed into Chat.

We seem to have fixed it by re-inviting each other, even though we were both already signed in and online. Weirdness.
