Buffistechnology 3: "Press Some Buttons, See What Happens."
Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
Der. It wasn't a what, but a where. On the main screen of Outlook navigating to Tools/Options/Spelling and changing the auto stuff there doesn't make a difference. Being in a reply or a newly composed messaged does.
The latter makes sense, but where am I affecting by making the changes off the main screens?
Looks like the replacement is fairly simple.
Oh, hey, cool. I always assume that laptop breakages are time for a new one.

That did cross my mind, especially with the new Apple laptops out today. But I wanna put off getting a new one for a little while longer. Maybe until a smaller Macbook Pro comes out....
Too bad it's not under warranty. I'd love to take it to a Genius Bar and say, "I don't know what happened - I just booted it up and it looked like this." (This would be more funny if I posted a picture of the screen.)
ita, have you tried putting a space before your name? Could it be some wanky auto-cap on the first letter of a new line that can't be turned off?
Tommy, for your mini/comcast problem, could it be the DNS in the network pref's? Try: [link]

It's fixed now that I found the correct place to save options for the Word editor used in email composition.
Tools\Options\Spelling\General Options\AutoCorrect\Capitalize first letter of sentences
from the main screen
isn't
it. That's correcting the language¹ English (U.S.), and I suppose my general normal.dot settings for everyday Word docs.
If I create a new message,
Tools\AutoCorrect Options\AutoCorrect\Capitalize first letter of sentences
is acting on Email: English(U.S.) and that seems to have taken across the board.
¹: At least I'm assuming that's a language. I can't find it from ToolsLanguage in Word on that computer.

Yeah, it seems that the Comcast installation software temporarily modifies the system to make all DNS requests point to a Comcast IP address until the installation is complete. So if the installation fails, you're hosed, even if you get internet access set up the normal way (by having a Comcast human enter your modem or router's MAC address).
I've been reading a lot about Comcast service people insisting that users install their software. Apparently it rebrands IE with some Comcast crap and installs other bad stuff. I only let the guy install the software after he was put on hold by their own tech support for over 40 minutes.
I think I'll just nuke it from orbit (I was thinking of installing Leopard anyway).
ION, Time Capsule is finally in! I've been using Time Machine to back up everything except iTunes, due to not having a big enough external drive (I've been backing iTunes up manually to my Mini's external drive). I think I'll pick up a Time Capsule and back everything up before I take apart my MacBook's LDC display....
I'm surprised my Macbook is still usable. It's like having to use a 640x480 display, though.

This absolutely drives me crazy about Outlook. It is the worst designed piece of software from the standpoint of debugging simple stuff that I can think of. One of my fondest wishes is to catch the developers of Outlook in a dark alley and beat them to within an inch of their lives with watermelons.
As sucky as Outlook is, Lotus Notes is worse. Incredibly non-intuitive.
I hate, hate the use of modal dialogs in Outlook. You can't compose an email and look up an address at the same time.
