I'm back into Windows, and all my data seems to be there, but I've lost every frelling setting. I started this at 10 a.m. and dog knows how long it's going to take me to reset up everything and figure out all those damn passwords.

Oh, and Ginger... Now that you are back into windows, I recommend TweakUI [link] it lets you designate an account to autologin on boot and a dozen other tweaks.
You can use it for the one thing or many. Just download, install and then run the program find the autologin section. Screenshots here: [link]

ION, I "recharged" a 3v button battery (CR3025) by taping it carefully to a 9v for 1/2 hour.
If it gives me a few blood tests before I can get to the store for a replacement, that'll work out well.

Y'know, I've had similar problems on Macs through the years, too.
So it ain't just a Windows thing.

I've used Windows many, many years, and that's the first time it's gone quite so bad. Six hours of troubleshooting is very tiring, though. The initial mistake was mine, although I was trying to fix something that had popped up when I installed something else. I think of the inside of my computer as a battleground.
I'll take a look at TweakUI, DJ.
